Parents need to know that Shopkins: Welcome to Shopville ties in with the Shopkins toy line, which includes tiny collectible shopping-themed products. In Shopville, kids move their Shopkin character through the street from store to store playing mini-games.
There are no in-app purchases or ads for the toys, though kids can enter product codes from toy packaging to add those items to their collections. As kids complete the mini-games and earn enough coins, they unlock new Shopkins to add to their virtual collections. Personal information may be used for marketing.
For more information about the types of information collected and shared, read the app's. Shop at the Candy Store, Homewares, Small Mart, and Cupcake Shop, playing different games in each store with SHOPKINS: WELCOME TO SHOPVILLE. In the candy store kids collect a certain candy, in Small Mart they toss groceries into the shopping bag, and in Homewares they sort appliances through the right door. Kids earn coins based on how well they complete each activity, earning a new Shopkin for every five coins or so that they collect. Kids can view their collections from within the app, and they can unlock a surprise store once they've collected enough coins.
The toy-collecting craze goes virtual and broadens the fun with four fun mini-games (plus a bonus game), but some parents may object to the completely consumer-focused objectives. Kids who collect Shopkins will love adding to a virtual collection, but the games are actually fun and challenging for non-collectors, too.
Though the games offer entertainment and variety, kids may tire of it before playing long enough to unlock the fifth surprise store, which takes quite a lot of play time to open. Also, though there are no in-app purchases, everything is about shopping and products - including candy and cupcakes - so it's not an app for families who want to downplay consumerism.
